Put on your black turtleneck, tilt that beret, and bring a little café-poet attitude to the dance floor.

This Wednesday, Cat’s Corner is leaning into our North Beach roots for Beatnik Ball — a night inspired by the neighborhood’s legendary jazz, poetry, art, and late-night bohemian spirit.

We’re dancing just steps from City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio Café, Jack Kerouac Alley, and generations of artists, writers, musicians, and beautiful weirdos who helped make North Beach one of San Francisco’s most iconic creative neighborhoods. So come ready to get a little poetic between dances.

Dress cool, creative, and danceable: black turtlenecks, berets, stripes, dark sunglasses, scarves, loafers, cigarette pants, pencil skirts, vintage dresses, sport coats, goatees real or imagined, and anything that says, “I wrote this poem on a napkin at 2 AM.”

And yes — the theme is Beatnik, but the floor will be all swing.

Live onstage: Ryan Calloway and the SF Syncopators

Ryan Calloway and the SF Syncopators bring hot jazz with 1920s and ’30s flavor, ragtime roots, and plenty of dance-floor fire.

Led by reed player and bandleader Ryan Calloway, the group has a lively, loose, toe-tapping sound made for swing dancers — crisp rhythms, vintage charm, and enough heat to keep the room buzzing from the first tune to the last.

Poetry Slam Contest at the band break

During the 10–10:30 PM band break, we’re holding a short-form poetry slam contest.

Bring a poem to share — or go full improv. Each poem should be 1 minute or less.

Make it funny, moody, romantic, surreal, dance-inspired, North Beach-inspired, or completely off the cuff. Serious poetry is welcome. Ridiculous poetry is strongly encouraged. Snapping is optional but spiritually appropriate.

Winner gets:

1 month of free Cat’s Corner swing dance party admissions

Free to enter. Just show up with a poem and a little nerve.
